CORAL RESTORATION

BECAUSE, CONSERVATION IS NOT LONGER ENOUGH, WE ARE COMMITTED TO RESTORATION

Coral reefs, one of the most important ecosystems on our planet are facing multiple threats that are bringing them to the brink of collapse.

That is why we are committed to an ambitious restoration project in the “Corales del Rosario” National Park, known as the Rosario Islands.

THESE ARE JUST SOME OF THE THREATS THEY FACE

GLOBAL WARMING

Literally, corals are being “cooked alive” generating massive mortality.

CONTAMINATION

Pollution, dumping of solid and liquid waste (often chemical), among others.

CORAL DISEASES

The most aggressive coral disease is the Stony coral tissue loss disease.

OVERFISHING

Lack of respect for closed seasons, mass fishing and trawling, among others.

RESTORATION THROUGH ASSISTED SEXUAL REPRODUCTION

With this assisted sexual reproduction methodology, unlike that carried out by the fragmentation technique, genetic diversity is achieved in the new individuals, offering greater possibilities of adaptation.

CORAL SPAWNING

Identifying the moment in which different species reproduce massively.

COLLECTING GAMETES

They are carefully collected by our team to be taken to the recovery center.

FERTILIZATION

We mixed eggs and sperm to facilitate fertilization in the laboratory.

LARVAE CULTURE

Embryos and larvae are monitored to check their development and mobility.

SETTLEMENT

Settles and attach themselves in suitable substrate we provide and start growing a new colony.

OUTPLANTING

Once they are ready, we outplant these substrates onto the reefs where the new coral will grow.

WE NEED THEM MORE THAN EVER

ECOTOURISM AND CONSERVATION

Responsible tourism that generates decent jobs for local communities.

BIODIVERSITY AND FOOD SAFETY

They occupy 0,1% of the sea and support 25% of all marine species.

COSTAL PROTECTION

Vital role in coastal protection acting as natural barriers.

SCIENCE AND RESEARCH

In areas of environmental conservation, medicine or education, among others.
